Judgment expected in Marievale eviction case

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Judgment is expected to be handed down on Friday in the Marievale eviction case at the High Court in Johannesburg.

Residents of Marievale, east of Johannesburg, approached the court after they were evicted from an old SANDF base despite being in possession of a court order preventing the Defence Force from removing them in November.

More than 600 residents were removed after coal was reportedly discovered in the area.

Community members have since made makeshift homes in the nearby vacant land.

Right 2 Know spokesperson Raymond Louw says they will be picketing outside the court to voice their concerns.

Louw says: “Today’s judgment is according to the court interdict that the South African National Defence Force ignored. The court order was served to them and they ignored the court order because they said they want to evict the people before they can deal with the interdict.”

“We are going out in numbers infront of the High Court in Johannesburg to voice and tell people that no one is above the law in this country,” adds Louw.
