Suspended HoD fights to stop Esidimeni subpoena

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Suspended Head of Gauteng Health Department Barney Selebano will be back in the High Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday for his urgent application.

Selebano wants the court to set aside a subpoena ordering him to appear before the Life Esidimeni arbitration hearings into the deaths of 143 mentally ill patients after they were moved to unlicensed NGOs. The state is opposing his application.

He is one of the key people that retired deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke  identified as the most vital to give testimonies regarding the deaths of mentally ill patients.

Selebano has been subpoenaed to appear at the hearings taking place in Parktown, Johannesburg next Monday to explain his role in the bungled re-locations.
