Suppression of testosterone in female athletes unethical: Sasop

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The South African Society of Psychiatrists (Sasop) says the proposed rule by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) to medically suppress testosterone levels of some female athletes is unethical and a violation of human rights.

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) is expected to rule at the end of April on a challenge by Olympic champion, Caster Semenya, to the proposed rules.

”As a society, we’re basically supporting Caster Semenya’s fight to compete in her natural state.  We do this in the hope of promoting equity in sport and excellence in women’s health in general,” says Sasop Spokesperson Anusha Lachman.
