Sundowns tipped to walk away with PSL title

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Pundits have already tipped log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to walk away with the Absa Premiership title this season.

However, Sundowns’ lead was cut to just four points midweek, after a 2-all draw against third placed Maritzburg United.

There are two matches left and Sundowns cannot afford to falter with second-placed Orlando Pirates breathing down their necks.

The two remaining matches will be like cup finals for Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, it is not going to be easy facing two teams who also need maximum points for different reasons. The next game is against 15th placed Ajax Cape Town at home, a team that is trying to avoid the promotion/relegation play-off.

In the last match of the season, it is Bloemfontein Celtic, and they are fighting for a top eight finish.

Former Bafana Bafana Striker Shaun Bartlett says the title is for Sundowns to lose.

“They are in the driving seat. Obviously, the way they have been playing it has been quite entertaining. It is another big game. Every game will be big until end of the season, but because of their experience I will go with Sundowns for winning the league this season. Obviously, Pirates has done a lot better, but it’s a stepping stone in the right direction and  I am sure they would want to try and win it but I think it is a hurdle too far for them.”

Bidvest Wits keeper Moneed Josephs says, “It’s been a good race. It is always good that someone gets competition to teams like Sundowns. Sundowns, I feel I have the experience to go and win this, but you never write down the underdog… the underdog Orlando Pirates. They’ve done really well this season; played good football; attractive football under their coach as well, and look more like a unit, you know. So, it’s going to be really interesting this final run to the end.”

Sundowns Coach Pitso Mosimane understands all the permutations needed to walk away with the league title.

“A point is not bad. We need three from the last two games, and we got to be smart. When we won the championship last time we took a point against Ajax; we went to Tuks, we won it against Tuks. So, it’s okay, you know. It’s part of football. If you can’t take the heat; if you can’t win get three points out of the six then what do you want? We’ve got a good team that can do that.”

Orlando Pirates Coach Milutin Sredojevic says, “For us, it is all about focusing on the next match. Pressure is somewhere else. For us, it’s to play good football, to make proud our supporters.”

All the remaining matches of the season will now kick off at the same time.

Saturday’s matches get underway at 3 o’clock.
