Book honour for soccer legend ‘Sugar Ray’ Xulu

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The legacy of South African football legend Cedric “Sugar Ray” Xulu is being celebrated in a novel entitled “Through the eyes of an icon”.

The 78-year-old soccer great has continued to reside in his family home in Claremont, in Durban, where his passion for soccer all began.

While Xulu played for a number of clubs, he is best remembered for his time with Amazulu Football Club.

Chairperson of the eThekwini Football Family and Legends – an organisation that recognises the contribution of local soccer heroes from pre-1994, Vuma Mfeka has praised Sugar Ray for his contribution to soccer.

“It also relates to a brief history of football. How football was developed in South Africa especially in KZN. When they were playing in Umhluzeni and also played at Curries Fountain which was a multi-racial soccer league. Sugar Ray played for Zulu Royals. Zulu Royals at that time won the League in 1972 and also played for Avalon Athletics which was a multi-racial soccer league.”

“There is a stadium that is also named after him. So one of our objectives is to say football in South Africa did not only start in 1996. So go back to the older players who graced this gane in the early 60’s and early 70’s.”

The book is currently only available in isiZulu with the English edition expected soon.
