Strike in Gauteng state mortuaries to continue

National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) says the strike at the state mortuaries in Gauteng will continue until the department commits to its promises.

Forensic Medical Services Workers have returned to work after being on strike for over a week. The strike left bereaved families frustrated as they were unable to bury their loved ones.

When workers went on strike last year, they were promised training and that they would be registered with the Health Professions Council, but it did not happen.

Nehawu’s provincial deputy general secretary, Gracia Rikhotso says, “We will be proceeding with the strike, but what we are respecting is the fact that the court has interdicted us and we have been requested to make representation as to why we feel that interdict should be challenged. We will be meeting with our legal department and we will be making representations to court so that we are allowed with our strike.”
