Traffic volumes on the country’s major roads are on the increase, despite people already having reached their holiday destinations.

According to the Automobile Association, an increase in volumes have mostly been experienced on the N1 up to Limpopo, the N2 and the N3.

AA spokesperson Layton Beard says there has been a significant increase in traffic volumes. “There is a lot more traffic on the roads, definitely more than what we would normally have seen and then with this increase in traffic we are obviously also seeing a lot more crashes, unfortunately on these routes as well.”

In Gauteng, the number of fatalities are reportedly high. Beard says this is a concern as the number in the province is already far  more than it was the whole of the festive season last year.

“What we have heard from the MEC in Gauteng is that the number of fatalities so far in Gauteng is already more than it was the whole of the festive season last year and that’s certainly a very worrying statistic. I think when we look at what the challenges are its still going to come down to driver behaviour , people who are not obeying the rules of the road and we can’t leave road safety in the hands of the authorities alone.”
