State must act harshly against unsafe mines: Malema

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says the high rate of the deaths of mine workers in South Africa shows how mine bosses do not prioritise the safety of mineworkers.

Six mine workers died on Sunday at the Palabora Mining Company in Limpopo, bringing the number of fatalities at mines around the country this year to over 50.

All six were trapped in an incident early on Sunday morning and it’s believed that a fire broke out at one of the underground conveyor belts.

Mining operations have since seized to allow for an investigation to take place.

Malema termed the incident as private capital wanting to maximise profits with no consideration for the safety of mine workers.

He has called on the state to act harshly against mines that do not have sound safety practices in place and revoke their mining licences.
