Speculation is rife Zuma’s future will be on ANC NEC agenda

The ANC’s National Executive Committee will start getting to grips with the business of running the party over the next two days.

It is the NEC’s first ordinary meeting kicking off in Irene Pretoria on Thursday since Cyril Ramaphosa was elected party President last month.

It is expected to select its National Working Committee as well as the policy Sub-Committees.

Speculation is rife that it will also deliberate on President Jacob Zuma’s future.

Thursday’s NEC will give the first glimpse into where the balance of power in the new NEC lies.

This will be reflected by who makes it to the powerful National Working Committee – the operational arm of the party concerned with its day to day running.

The selection of the Chairpersons of the Sub-Committees will also give some indication of what possible emphasis may be put on certain aspects of the party’s different policies.

Whether the recall of President Jacob Zuma will be discussed is yet to be seen, this after indications that there is discomfort by some members of the existence of two centres of power within the party.

The meeting will be followed by a meeting of the ANC’s Lekgotla on the weekend.
