Spanish coast guards rescue migrants at sea

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Spain’s Maritime Rescue Service released footage on Saturday of a coast guard boat taking migrants from a dinghy adrift in the Alboran Sea and rescuing one of the men who fell off the boat into the water.

The rescue was part of wider operation on Saturday when Spain’s coast guard rescued 768 migrants who were trying to reach Spanish shores in about 25 small boats, the Maritime Rescue Service said.

The migrants were taken from their precarious boats in the Strait of Gibraltar, the Alboran Sea and near the Canary Islands, it said.

Earlier this month Spain offered safe haven to the charity ship Aquarius that was blocked from docking in Italy or Malta as Rome’s new government tries to pressure European partners to shoulder more of the burden of immigration from North Africa.

On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron met Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Paris where both leaders agreed more detention centres were needed in Europe.

EU leaders will hold an emergency meeting on Sunday (June 24) to discuss migration.
