Fifteen taxi operators have been arrested and their taxis impounded for operating on the routes that have been declared closed in Soweto.

Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Ismail Vadi has ordered the closure of ranks and routes operated by feuding taxi associations Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (Wata) and Nancefield Dube West Taxi Association (Nanduwe).

Police have been deployed to Soweto in large numbers to enforce the closure.

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said, “Fifteen taxi drivers have been arrested for contravention of regulation of the provincial gazette which prohibits certain taxis from certain routes which have been declared closed.  The drivers have been detained at Orlando and Moroka police stations.”
