Parents at the Soweto District have expressed anxiety over the placement of their children for the 2020 academic year.

Over 800 parents say the Soweto District has allegedly not begun the process of placing their children despite having received SMS’s alerting them to accept offers made by the Department of Education.

One parent, Victor Mohlaba says, “We have been coming here since Thursday. We spent the whole day here in this district in Soweto, we were not serviced. We came again on Friday, we did not go to work, we still did not get the service.”

“The Gauteng online is definitely failing the people. If we could just get the placement, we will all be happy so that in January we don’t have worries as to where our child will go to attend school,” added Mohlaba.

Meanwhile, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says employees have been attacked and intimidated at District Offices at some areas in the province.

Lesufi says, “Some parents say they are anxious over the placement of their children for the 2020 academic year. Parents say the process of placing their children has not been completed, despite having received SMS’s alerting them to accept offers made by the Department.”

He says the Department is trying to deploy additional staff, and he himself is on his way to the most problematic offices. He also warned frustrated parents that any form of violence will not be tolerated and if it persists, offices will be closed.”
