The Pan SA Language Board, in association with media research company Focal Points, debated the shortlist and made the announcement on Wednesday morning.
The research covered the period starting from 1 October 2018 to end of September 2019.
It looks at the most popular words and phrases used on different media platforms including electronic, print and online media.
