‘South African and Nigerian nationals must integrate’

Nigeria’s new High Commissioner to South Africa Ahmed Musa Ibeto says there is a need for intensified engagement amongst government and civilian organisations, to harmonise tense relations between Nigerians and local citizens.

This follows the recent attacks on immigrants mainly Nigerian nationals in Rustenburg in the North-West province.

The violent clashes led to the torching of several houses after allegations by locals that Nigerian nationals were using these properties as drug dens.

The clashes heightened tensions, sparking fears of the rise of another wave of xenophobic attacks.

Ibeto says he will soon embark on a road-show to engage local communities to promote the spirit of tolerance amongst the locals and Nigerian nationals.

He says any Nigerian seen in South Africa has come to add value.

“In the same way we have so many South Africans in Nigeria and largest investments. No Nigerian is attacking any South African in Nigeria. South Africa and Nigeria are brothers, we need to integrate,” says Ibeto.
