Reading Time: < 1 minute

South Africa is leading discussions at the United Nations (UN) for the General Assembly to convene a High Level Peace Summit next year in former late President Nelson Mandela’s name.

The country’s Ambassador to the UN has held an informal dialogue with member states after already securing the backing of the Africa Group and the African Union.

The proposed summit would be held a day before the start of the high level week of the General Assembly in September next year.

Ambassador Jerry Matjila explains that they hope Madiba’s name will help push the world towards greater peace and security.
