Mthethwa calls on Africans to reclaim Ubuntu

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As the continent celebrates Africa Month Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa has called on Africans to reclaim Ubuntu.

The Minister was speaking at the Living Legends Dialogue held in Sophia town in Johannesburg.

This platform has been created to celebrate legends in the art space while they are still alive, and selected artists will hold master class sessions across the country to educate young people on efforts they have made in liberating the country through art.

South Africa’s legends of theatre, music, writing and photography have started “Africa Week” on a high note. The legends who are mostly in their 70’s and 80’s are embarking on a campaign to build a better Africa through conversations and collaborations with young artists, and also master classes.

The “Made in Sophiatown” living legends survived the brutality of apartheid but have not lost their spirit of resilience. Despite all the difficulties they had overcome, they still imagine a prosperous Africa.  These legends have come back to Kofifi where many of them started their careers.

The aim of going back to Kofifi is to give life to this year’s Africa Day theme – Building a Better Africa, Building a Better World.

While the Living Legends will impart their wisdom, more needs to be done for them to age in dignity. A R20 million Fund has been established to kick start the Living Legends Legacy Project.

Some of the activities will entail master classes, collaborations with young artists, and other international stars.
