Solly Msimanga distances himself from corruption claims

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Tshwane Executive Mayor Solly Msimanga has defended himself against the corruption allegations on which Thursday’s motion of no confidence in him will be based.

The African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are bringing separate motions of no confidence.

They cite alleged corruption in a R12-billion project management contract.

Msimanga says the investigation into the contract is still on-going, but that the city manager responsible has been suspended pending the investigation.

He’s also questioned the motives behind the motion.

“The question is this, what is the game plan? We’ll tell you what the game plan is. Either someone is elected from the opposition to lead the opposition, or they want to push that there is no mayor of Tshwane in place so that the province which is the ANC then gets to assume government. That’s the real reason all this is happening,” says Msimanga.

ANC leader in Tshwane, Kgosi Maepa, who has been nominated by the party to take over from Msimanga, is confident that the motion will succeed.

“The motion to make sure that the DA doesn’t continue with corruption in the city that is well documented now. We are confident as the ANC that the parties we have lobbied will pull it through. We have lobbied sufficiently and we are sure of outright majority. What will surprise the media and the country is that there will be even DA people voting with us on this motion.”
