Surgeons at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town have begun with reconstructive surgery on 41 children as part of Smile Week.

The Smile Foundation assists children with facial conditions to get life changing surgery.

Specialist surgeons will conduct the procedures in what it says is the biggest smile week this year.

The foundation’s CEO, Hedley Lewis, says the youngest patient is three-years-old.

“Our call to action always is for Mommies to say if you’ve got a child that may have a cleft palate or a child with a need for burns reconstructive surgery, ear or nose reconstructive surgery, crania just to name a few of the supports that we have. Every one of them can join heroes of this hospital environment to change children’s lives.”
