Many South Africans are eagerly waiting for the blood moon on Friday night.

The moon is due to light up the night sky during the lunar eclipse. Astronomers say the eclipse is expected to be the longest of the century, lasting over 103 minutes.

The eclipse will begin after 7PM but peak times to view it will be between 9:30 and 11:15PM.

Jonathan Padavatan is a technician at the Wits Planetarium says, “What happens is the moon, as it moves around the Earth, it passes through the Earth’s shadow and every now and against because of the angle of the orbit and some of the light comes through the atmosphere and the red light comes through an illuminates the moon in that reddish colour – which is what we call the blood moon.”
