President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to late ANC veteran Zola Skweyiya, describing him as a revered freedom fighter and committed public servant.

Ramaphosa has described his death as a sad moment for both the ANC and government.

“The passing of Dr Skweyiya is a great loss to our movement, to our people, to our country because he is one of those leaders who served our movement and country with great distinction.  We pay our tribute to him because his contribution will live for many years after his passing.”

Ramaphosa who was accompanied by his Deputy, David Mabuza, visited the Skweyiya family in Pretoria east on Thursday night and announced that government will grant the struggle stalwart a special official funeral.

Skweyiya died on Wednesday at Kloof private hospital east of Pretoria at the age of 75.
