Simbine upsets Blake to win gold at Commonwealth Games

Akani Simbine won gold while countryman Henricho Bruintjies claimed silver in a dominant South African performance in the men’s 100m at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia, on Monday.

With Jamaican Yohan Blake considered the favourite, it was Simbine who dominated from start to finish to win by a clear margin in 10.03. Bruintjies was his closest challenger crossing the line in 10.17, with Blake settling for third in 10.19.

Meanwhile, Chad le Clos completed an historic triple gold haul with victory in the men’s 100m butterfly.

With his triumph, Le Clos made it gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly events.

Le Clos in typical fashion started well and was just ahead at the turn, but in the final 50m he powered away to win by a clear margin in 50.65 seconds which was also a new Commonwealth Games record.

England’s James Guy was some way behind in second in 51.31, with Grant Irvine of Australia completing the podium with bronze in 51.50.

Earlier, Tatjana Schoenmaker completed her double gold haul in the women’s 100m breaststroke.
