South African spring king Akani Simbine says he’s looking forward to racing against another sprint sensation in Anaso Jobodwana in Saturday’s 200m final of the South African Athletics national championships at the Germiston Stadium.

Simbine and Jobodwana won their respective semi-finals in 20.51 secs and 21.17 secs respectively on Day 2 of the championships.

With the final set to be around 18:15 on Saturday, Simbine says this final has got the potential to be the highlight of this year’s championships.

Simbine, who specializes in the 100m and is SA’s recorder holder in 9.89 secs, has a personal best of 19.95 secs in the 200m but in Jobodwana he’s up against a specialist in this event.

A new SA 200m champion will be crowned on Saturday after the current champion Luxolo Adams false started during the semis and also the SA 200m record holder Clarence Munyai pulled out of the semis. But still Simbine expects a competitive field.

Jobodwana has struggled in the past two years with injuries but he seems to coming up okay nicely this year, so early in the new season. He’s also excited by the competitive field in this 200m and says for him it’s like racing in a major athletics meeting.
