Shoprite employees to embark on strike

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Workers at Shoprite Checkers outlets across the country will embark on a one-day strike on Friday.

Workers union South Africa Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) says the strike arises out of a dispute they have with management over changes in working conditions.

They also want the employer to provide transport for workers and the immediate reinstatement of 23 workers who were dismissed at the Shoprite Checkers store in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.

Saccawu’s Mike Tau says, “You are in terms of the law and sectorial determination act supposed to be working 45 hours per week. The company now wants them to work 45 hours per week spread through seven days. Which means you might not have a Sunday. Your Sunday can become a Monday. You might also be required to work on a public holiday but they want to convert that to make it a working normal day.”
