Shock over death of Metro Police Officers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has expressed shock at the senseless killings of two Metro Police Officers in separate incidents this week.

In Ekurhuleni, a 50 year old constable was fatally shot during a robbery at a Selcourt Engen Garage in Springs on Tuesday.

In another incident, a 47 year old Officer who is a member of Johannesburg Metro Police Department was shot in the head as he tried to stop an alleged hijacking incident in Booysens, South of Johannesburg.

Malobane says officers need to fight back against such criminals.

She says police must not die with their guns particularly when they are being threatened.

“When their lives are at stake they must not hesitate to protect themselves. I think it is time that we actually allow our officers to really protect themsleves when their lives are in danger. We are not asking them to go out and kill as they like but they must make sure they use those guns to protect themselves,” adds Malobane.

Meanwhile the City of Johannesburg will hold a memorial service for a JMPD Officer. Johanneburg’s MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun says as a show of respect for the officer and his family, they will be holding a memorial service and also a wreath laying ceremony where the incident happened at 11 o’clock this morning and the memorial will be at 2pm.

“This is something that we are sad by and very angry and this just weeks after two of our other JMPD officers were killed by a drunk driver on Witkoppen road,’ says Sun.
