Shivambu urges ‘easy access’ to Mama Winnie’s funeral service

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Deputy President of the EFF, Floyd Shivambu, has appealed to those in authority to ease the security measures during Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s funeral on Saturday.

He says the security arrangements must be addressed soon. Thousands of people had to wait at the stadium entrance at her Memorial Service as security personnel insisted on searching them before they could enter.

Shivambu says Mama Winnie was a people’s person and so people should be allowed free access to the Orlando Stadium.

The EFF’s Floyd Shivambu says Mama Winnie wouldn’t be impressed with the security restriction imposed on the masses.

Government spokesperson Phumla Williams says the security check is important because it helps to avoid a possibility of a stampede at the stadium.

“We try as much as we possible can to take into account the security of the people that will be in that particular venue,” says Willams.

“So you will find that in some instances there is an inconvenience, but it’s not an inconvenience that is malicious, but its an inconvenience that we need to be responsible as government and make sure that these people, when they come here, don’t come out with some injuries.”
