Stage classic Romeo and Juliet, one of the greatest love stories ever penned,  has vowed audiences at the  National Arts Festival in Makhanda.

The Cape Town City Ballet’s production of the Shakespeare work captures the essence of the dramatic story by keeping to the original and heart wrenching scenes.

“I’m so glad that we could come to Grahamstown and do this again. One of my favourite roles, it’s so emotional going through all emotions, happy sad, going through death,” says Mariette Opperman who plays  Juliet.

“Playing the part of Romeo for me, you get so into your emotions you fall in love. You young and innocent and naive and that’s what I love and it’s such a dramatic role,” says Craig Pedro who plays  Romeo.

The audience was moved by the beauty and by the sadness.

“I think it was very well choreographed, the dancers were amazing and the costumes were stunning. So they did a really good job and they should be proud of themselves,” said one attendee.

“Juliet really did stand out for me. She was beautiful and captured our hearts. The play was amazing,” added another one.
