While South Africans have a right to housing, many across the country are shack dwellers or live informal settlements without electricity or access to clean running water. Sebenzile Mbolekwa is an 80-year-old resident of Nomakanjani informal settlement in Port Elizabeth.
He is part of a group of disgruntled residents who’ve had their houses demolished several times for illegally occupying a piece of land, earmarked for a housing project. Some of the residents in this area claim to have been on the housing list for a number of years.
Mbolekwa believes the safest way to ensure you get an RDP house, is to wait in a shack.
