Serena Williams has been backed by the women’s tennis governing body, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), in the aftermath of her on-court behaviour during her US Open final defeat to Naomi Osaka on Saturday.

WTA chief executive, Steve Simon, suggested that the umpire showed a different level of tolerance to the American due to her being a woman.

The six-time US Open champion had received a mixture of support and condemnation from fellow players and former professionals, but appears to have the backing of the WTA.

She was one of ten women punished for code violations at 2017 US Open, while 26 men were fined.

Williams was fined $17 000.
