Reading Time: 2 minutes

The South Eastern European country of Serbia is fastly becoming the economic powerhouse in the Balkan region, 17 years after the violent overthrow of former President Slobodan Milosevic.

The country’s main trading partners are Germany, Italy, Russia and China.

The former Yugoslavia territory is also a new tourist destination in Eastern Europe.

It’s a cold winter season in Serbia, with snow being a common feature.

The former Yugoslavia has become a beacon of hope for peace in the region, emerging from the decades of war and conflicts.

Miodrag Popovic of the national assembly of Serbia elaborates, “We are not in the European Union. We are in the negotiating process with the EU. On the other side, we are very closed economically and politically and politically with China we have a huge market.”

The key economic sectors are energy, mining, agriculture and the automotive industry.

Dr Misa Djurkovic from the Serbian Institute for European studies says, “The biggest exporter now is Fiat, the international company that is producing its car in Serbia. We have 65% of the services we have. Unemployment is smaller than it used to be.”

Tourism is also booming in the capital, Belgrade.

Dr Misa Djurkovic further elaborates, “We are back on the map due to the political situation in this country and due to the overall situation in this region. Serbia is a leader in so many respects in this region. That is why Europeans are coming to discover the new destination.”

The Chinese and Russians top the nations touring Serbia.
