The Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) and the Sunshine Tour launched the second edition of the Limpopo Golf Championship at Euphoria Golf Estate in Modimolle on Thursday.

204 golfers are expected to descend to Limpopo’s Waterberg District from 30 January to 2 February at Euphoria and Koro Creek Bushveld Golf Estate.

According to Sunshine Tour Chief Operations Officer (COO) Grant Wilson, 2020’s event is co-sanctioned with the European Challenge Tour.

The Limpopo championship is the first of three golf events to be sanctioned by the European body.

The event is being hosted on an earlier date than in 2019, which was in March. Wilson says the change in dates was in consideration of the golfing year calendar, especially the European Challenge Tour.

Wilson adds that there is a lot at stake, more than just rankings in 2020. The prize money has also increased from R1.5m last year to R3.5m in 2020, with Wilson admitting that money is very important for the development of golfers.

Meanwhile LTA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sonto Ndlovu is excited to again showcase the province to international markets through sport.

Ndlovu says as part of the agency’s CSI programme, the tournament donates a percentage of the money generated to the Limpopo Premier’s Bursary Fund.

The CEO is also pleased with the growth of the tournament.
