Scopa slams Sassa over mismanagement of funds

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) has lambasted the Social Security Agency (Sassa) for violating supply-chain management processes when planning three events in KwaZulu-Natal.

The events amounted to R4 million each.

The committee raised concerns on Tuesday about the fact that former acting Chief Executive Officer of Sassa Pearl Bhengu, speedily approved the request for these events without the three quotes required.

The Committee says it was apparent that prices were inflated for getting the required services.

Current acting CEO, Abraham Mahlangu and the new Minister, Susan Shabangu have made a commitment that action will be taken against officials where necessary and where applicable money will be recovered.
