The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that Friday morning there were challenges with regards to the payment of pensions and social grants.

SASSA and the South African Post Office’s IT divisions say they have managed to isolate what was causing the slow payments.

Beneficiaries have complained of not being able to access their monies while others say they could only receive a portion of it.

SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi has apologised to beneficiaries for the inconvenience caused.

He says: “This was basically caused by the integrated grant payment system which upon observation, it was very slow.”

“This system seeks to check the safety net and where people get paid in terms of their numbers all over the country. We can confirm that after midday we think our system will be up and running.”
