As SRC elections are winding down at tertiary institutions, new student councils have been put in place in all but two of the over 300 institutions.
But student participation in the polls have generally been quite low with voter turnout at around 20 percent.
Student bodies aligned to political parties dominate the campus landscape. The rivalry is intense but doesn’t seem to be hitting the right notes with students.
A bold prediction from South African Students Congress, the African National Congress-aligned student body, it used to rule the roost at tertiary institutions for decades.
But it’s lost its shine, and that’s prompted some self-reflection.
