SARS bolsters efforts to recover billions from taxpayers

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is taking steps to recover billions owed to it by taxpayers. It has appointed eight debt collection agencies to recover as much as possible of just above R16 billion in debt owed to it.

The Revenue Service says just over R2 million taxpayers and traders owe it just under R150 billion. SARS says in a statement that by outsourcing the recovery of older and relatively small amounts, it aims to boost revenue collection.

The agencies have until February next year to recover the targeted amount. Taxpayers and traders with outstanding accounts will only be contacted via electronic channels. Under no circumstances should debtors pay money directly to the debt collection agency.

All outstanding tax or duties must only be paid directly to SARS via authorised payment channels.
