SANDF to tighten borders amid Zimbabwe political impasse

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief of Joint Operations General Barney Hlatshwayo says the National Defence Force is tightening controls on the border with Zimbabwe.

But there are no plans to deploy SA military personnel to that country at this stage. The general’s raised concerns about a possible flooding of immigrants to South Africa should the situation in Zimbabwe worsen.

This comes as the Zimbabwe army takes control and President Robert Mugabe appears to be ousted.

General Hlatshwayo was speaking to SABC News at a roll out of Mobility Packages aimed at fighting cross-border crime near the Swaziland border at Ophongolo in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

“What is happening in Zimbabwe is a cause for concern for all of us in South Africa. But we are only hoping that the situation will not degenerate further. At this stage we will monitor whatever is happening. I can’t say we are having this plan or that plan to address whatever is happening in Zimbabwe, at this stage for us is just to monitor. The worst that can happen is flooding of our boarders with citizens. If then we need to deploy we will deploy within South African National borders not into Zimbabwe,” says Hlatshwayo.
