Sandf continues evicting Marievale residents despite court interdict

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Residents of Marievale east of Johannesburg say the South African National Defence Force (Sandf) continues to evict them from a run-down military base despite a court interdict barring them from doing so.

Residents joined by members of advocacy group Right 2 Know picketed outside the High Court in Johannesburg Monday morning.

They want the court to make their interdict permanent.

Marievale Community Association chairperson Chistopher Koitsioe says soldiers arrived again in the early hours of Monday morning.

He says they intimidated residents and demolished their shacks.

“The soldiers have got a court interdict that was given to the Minister of Defence on December 4. That court interdict says there is no one of the soldiers that is allowed to enter any civilian house and all the civilians that are in Marievale must be left in peace. There is no one that must be intimidated. But that never stopped them. We went to the extent of applying for a contempt of court but that never made a change. It is still continuing.”
