Sanco condemns Cape Town ambulance attack which left child dead

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) described as senseless the death of an eight-year-old being transported in an ambulance that was ambushed on the N2 highway, near the Cape Town International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The medical crew was held at gunpoint and robbed, leading to the critically injured boy, who sustained severe head injuries during a motor vehicle accident on Tuesday evening, dying due to the delay caused by the attack.

“The lunacy of senseless crime that robs patients the right to access medical care during their hour of need has to stop for emergency personnel to render services without the fear,” said Sanco national spokesman, Jabu Mahlangu.

“Communities must be the safety net for health practitioners as well as emergency personnel to work in their neighbourhoods without fear.”
