Bird conservation group, The Southern African Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), has opened a new seabird hospital in Table View.

Construction started in March 2017, and the structure includes a new hospital building consisting of two intensive care units, a wash bay area for oiled birds, a walk-in freezer to store increased amounts of fish, an expanded surgery, a laboratory, a medication room and a new x-ray room.

This makes it the biggest seabird hospital in Africa.

A new viewing platform at the centre of the facility will offer visitors a unique vantage point over the various pens.

This will enable SANCCOB to be even more responsive in their efforts to save greater numbers of seabirds, including endangered African penguins, of which only 2% remain in the wild today.
