Reading Time: < 1 minute

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) says they only have blood supply for two days and they are urging people to donate blood.

According to the SANBS they particularly have a shortage of blood supply in KwaZulu-Natal.

The service says people in urgent need of blood supply are mainly mothers giving birth, people involved in road accidents, patients suffering complications during major surgery and cancer patients.

Ivor Hobbs from the SANBS says that less than one percent of South Africans population donate blood.  He says that people can donate a minimum of twice and maximum of every 56 days a year. However, he says that they encourage people to donate blood four times a year.

Hobbs said, “blood donation is very much about convenience, so we want to encourage people if they know of venues where we can come and host a blood drive, we can go to them and make blood donation more convenient.”
