San people to enjoy World Cup commentary in own language

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The San people from Platfontein near Kimberley in the Northern Cape will for the first time in history be able to hear World Cup Football commentary in their own languages !Xunthali and Khwedam.

Two sport presenters will be broadcasting all of the 64 matches on the local SABC community radio station XK-FM.

For years the San people living in Platfontein were forced to listen to sport and other news in either English or Afrikaans but this has now changed.

“The trainer who was training us said anything is possible. That’s why I told myself that I can do it,” sys Khwedam presenter, Andrew Gongola.

A lot of planning by XK-FM station management went into making the historic broadcast possible.

“We trained them for two weeks. We got someone from the sports department in Johannesburg to come to Platfontein to train these four presenters for two weeks. They also have been broadcasting live from the FNB stadium where Kaizer Chiefs were playing and I think they are okay and will do it.  We chose 27 games out of the 44 and we are going to do live commentary on 17 of the 27,” says XK-FM Station Manager, Regina Beregho.

The excitement is overwhelming.
