Gospel musician, Hlengiwe Mhlaba has called on South African Music Rights Organisation (Samro) to come on the table so that the issue of royalties affecting musicians can be resolved.

This comes after media reports revealed that the organisation was allegedly unlawfully deducting royalties from some artists going back to 1963.

According to the investigation that was done by City Press, Mhlaba is being owed about R16 million.

Recently, Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa announced that the department will establish a Commission of Inquiry into the work being done by the Samro on royalties and copyright issues.

Mhlaba says Samro has only paid her R100 000 since she started singing back in 2004.

“There are people that are getting paid and I don’t know why they are getting paid. There are many musician that are dying poor and we have got orphans that their fathers were artist, musicians who have money that is not paid to them. I don’t want anybody’s money, I only want my money,” says Mhlaba.
