The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will convene an inquiry on Thursday in an attempt to find a lasting solution to the issues faced by Alexandra residents, north of Johannesburg.

The residents of Alexandra have been protesting over the mushrooming of illegal structures and lack of service delivery in the township.

SAHRC Gauteng Provincial Manager Buang Jones says: “The SAHRC has extended an invitation to the Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, the City of Johannesburg and the DG in the office of the premier. The purpose of this inquiry is to probe possible human rights violations in relation to socio-economic rights and service delivery in Alexandra.”
