The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has expressed concern about cultural practices that infringe on the rights of other people.

The Commission was reacting to the recent spate of the violation of the rights and killing of people with albinism in Mpumalanga.

Two children, one with albinism, were kidnapped from their home in Vosman near Emalahleni and later found dead in suspected muthi related killings.

In another incident in Pienaar outside Mbombela, a corpse of a person with albinism was dug from a grave and mutilated.

According to Commissioner for Human Rights, Jonas Sibanyoni such practices are in violation of the constitution.

“I want to specifically quote section number 31 of Chapter 2 which says person belonging to a culturally, religious, or linguistic communities may not be denied the right with other members of that community. But I want to speedily say that the constitution also says that either a culturally practice or a religious belief is allowed or is permissible to be enjoyed only if it’s not contrary to the values of the constitution,” says Sibanyoni.
