Saftu to take to streets for free education

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) has expressed disappointment on the Heher Fees Commission report’s recommendation that free education is not feasible.

Saftu says it stands firm in its demand that free education for all who qualify. It says this is in line with the Freedom Charter’s call for doors of learning to be opened. President Jacob Zuma released the long awaited report yesterday. It recommends that government hike spending on higher education by one per cent of GDP.

Saftu general-secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi says there would be a mass action to demand free education.

“We feel the Heher Commission report as a disappointment indeed. And now we are in a stage where we are preparing for massive campaign against this refusal to provide free education to our students. We are putting together structures throughout November and once all those structures are in place we will be in the streets and in the manner that the country has not seen in the long time,” says Vavi.
