The South African Football Association (Safa) national elections will no longer go ahead as scheduled this weekend.

A decision was made at a special National Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday afternoon to postpone it.

It follows the intervention of former Premier Soccer League (PSL) General Manager Ace Ncobo, who accused Safa of contravening its own statutes.

In the past few weeks, the federation has come under severe criticism for failing to follow the correct electoral procedures for the upcoming elections.

Part of the argument by Ncobo was that the nomination process and the appointment of the electoral committee were flawed.

The NEC felt it needed to put its house in order first.

Safa President Danny Jordaan says, “We are not prepared to have an election under the circumstances that has been generated over the last few weeks. It’s not something that we took lightly. We want a credible outcome and so the elections will be postponed.”

The NEC will now deal with issues that it feels could jeopardise a credible election.

Elections in three regions need to be completed prior to the national elections, and Fifa needs to be updated on matters relating to elections.

The nominees on the final list of the electoral committee need 14 days to prepare for the elections.

“The committee that we have appointed, we think it’s a credible committee. They are men and women of integrity and we must give them sufficient time to do their work in an efficient manner.”

As it stands, Jordaan continues as the President of the Association.

Meanwhile, a case that has been brought forward by Ncobo to interdict the Safa congress will be heard at the South Gauteng High Court on Thursday.

In a statement, Ncobo says Safa is in breach of a contract signed last week between the two parties to cancel the congress and to allow for a new nomination process.
