SADC committee continues to monitor Lesotho’s instability

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Southern African Development Community Oversight Committee mandated to be an early warning mechanism for instability in Lesotho is on its second mission in the mountain kingdom this week.

The committee is also monitoring constitutional and security reforms and implementation of the recommendations of the Phumaphi Commission which investigated the death of former army commander Maaparankoe Mahao.

The Committee members are drawn from Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Swaziland and Tanzania and chaired by retired Judge Frederic Mwita Werema from Tanzania.

The opposition says it will move a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister following a split his party Democratic Congress.

The constitution gives the Prime Minister two options if he loses that vote; to either resign or advise the King to call fresh elections, and he has vowed to call for elections.

Also former DC Deputy Leader Monyane Moleleki, who has formed a new party, says the opposition will vote against the budget to frustrate a government that they say no longer has majority in parliament.

All these issues have a likely impact on stability, and therefore, fall within the mandate of the SADC Oversight committee to probe.
