SABC to take firm action against any form of corruption

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) says that it will take decisive and appropriate action against any form of corruption. This follows a public legal spat about the awarding of a tender to Mafoko Security at the broadcaster.

In court, one side asserts that the R185 million tender was issued irregularly to the disadvantage of Majayeli security, which was a rival bidder at the time.

Mjayeli security queried the awarding of the tender.

In a press statement on Tuesday board chairperson Bongimusa Makhathini says he received an anonymous email making allegations of corruption.

He says the email implicated two former interim board members in an alleged security service tender corruption scandal.

The veracity of the allegations contained in the whistle blower report remains untested and the SABC has handed it over to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate.

Makhathini says he wrote to the SIU requesting the on-going investigation to be speeded up.

Meanwhile, the SABC has approached the High Court to suspend the hearing of the Mjayeli Security matter until the SIU had finalised their investigation.

It says it will be guided by the outcome of these processes.
