The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) launched its elections-focused website on Monday, as the election date draws closer and political parties continue campaigning across the country.

The public broadcaster will also broadcast a television show, Democracy Gauge, which takes a look at 25 years since South Africa acquired democracy.  The show will document and gauge how South Africans’ lives have been impacted since 1994.

SABC Group Executive (GE) of News Phathiswa Magopeni, says the concept of Democracy Gauge is fundamentally based on the public broadcaster’s social justice approach to news coverage.

“In this show, we are handing over the mic and camera to South Africans for them to express in their own voices, lived experiences and their quality of democracy and how they’ve experienced it,” she says.

The show aims to amplify the voices which are not usually heard, with unedited content that will tell South African stories, she adds.

Democracy Gauge will be hosted by Bongani Bingwa and aired at 18:00 on SABC News channel and SABC3 from Monday.

Magopeni also highlighed that a launch of news app is in the pipeline.
