SABC News crew robbed in North West

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A SABC News crew in North-West has been attacked and robbed off their equipment by a group of people at a filling station in Klerksdorp on Wednesday.

The crew was covering incidents of violent protests at Jouberton in Klerksdorp – as violent protests are spreading to other towns of the North West.

The crew say they are safe and the incident has been reported to the police.

Journalist Sellwane Khakhau, who is part of the crew that was robbed, says SABC cameraman Zolani Alexander was assaulted.  She says about ten people attacked them at a filling station in Klerksdorp.

“We cannot say for sure if the people who attacked us were part of the people who were involved in the protest action that we had just come from. Two men came straight to our car and started attacking the camera guy, Zwalani, physically – beating him with fists and other things. We didn’t really see what was going on as it happened so fast.

“They took everything that we had – our suitcases with clothes, all the SABC equipment, laptops, the SABC microphone and camera, everything that was in the car. There was quite a number of them attacking us, like more than 10 people,” Khakhau explained.
