The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) says it has no plans to host a debate between ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa and DA leader Mmusi Maimane.

It says it has however approached political party leaders to participate in one of its programmes, The Big Debate.

This comes after information circulating on social media saying there will be a debate between the leader of the ruling party and the main opposition.

SABC spokesperson Vuyo Mthembu says: “There has been no communication from us to the public in this regard.”

“We will however like to state that one of our elections productions, The Big Debate, has approached leaders of political parties to participate in a debate scheduled for its final episode ahead of the May 8 elections.”

“Plans for the proposed debate are still currently underway. The SABC has been consistent in making the public aware of its programming, and commits to make such information publicly available when there are new developments in this regard.”
